Travel Information

By Air

Glasgow International Airport is approximately seven miles from the University of Glasgow. A bus will take you from the airport to the city centre (Buchanan Bus Station) and costs £3.30 one way (£5 return). Then you can catch the underground at Buchanan Street station (next to Queen Street railway station) and it is four stops to Hillhead Station on Byres Road (near University of Glasgow), for £1 per journey. A taxi from the airport to the West End of Glasgow (i.e. the university) costs around £18. You can pick up a taxi at the airport but for a cheaper option it is best to book one (see below for recommended companies).

If you book early enough, you can obtain cheap flights to Glasgow International Airport from Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted, other British regional airports and Amsterdam using the following airlines:
From Geneva, recommended routes include connections with British Airways (recommended to Gatwick, since BA to Geneva-Heathrow operates from terminal 4 at Heathrow and terminal 1 for Heathrow-Glasgow), Easyjet (via Luton, Gatwick or Amsterdam), KLM (via Amsterdam), a combination of Swiss and British Airways or British Midland.

By Rail

There are intercity links to all major cities. There are two major city-centre terminals - Central Station and Queen Street Station (served by Buchanan St and St Enoch underground stations respectively). For rail enquiries look here.

By Coach

Buchanan Street Bus Station is the main terminus for long distance coaches. Coach information by found here.

By Car

From Carlisle, Newcastle and the south, exit M74 on to the M73, joining the M8 at the Old Monkland junction. M8 exits for the University are J18 if travelling from the south, Edinburgh and the north and J19 if coming from Glasgow Airport and the west. Other main routes serving the University include Great Western Road (A82, north of campus), Clydeside Expressway (A814, south) and Byres Road (B808, west). Car parking on the University campus and surrounding area is extremely difficult. (See below for useful maps)

Travelling within Glasgow

Local travel information may be found here.

Buses

Routes 11 and 44 runs through the main campus from the city centre. Numerous other routes serve Dumbarton Road, Great Western Road, and Byres Road. In addition, seasonal tourist route stops at the University. A weekly bus ticket (for normal buses) costs £11 and you can buy this off the bus driver. Daily tickets cost £2.50 (£2.20 off peak) or can buy single fairs. The bus drivers do not give change so make sure you have lots change so you that can give the exact fare. Here is the bus timetable for number 44 and here is a place where you can search for bus timetables.

Underground

For more information contact SPT: +44 (0)141 226 4826. The main station for the University is "Hillhead". "Kelvinhall" and "Kelvinbridge" stations are more convenient for some locations. The single ticket cost £1 (£2 return). Alternatively, a "discovery" ticket costs £1.90 and lasts all day. You can also buy block tickets (10 or 20) which lowers the price again.

Local Trains

For information about local trains telephone: +44 (0)8457 484950. The nearest suburban rail station is Partick, about one mile to the west of the University. It has an interchange with the underground and with bus services on Dumbarton Road.

Taxis

Black taxi cabs can be picked up at most times in the University area and the city centre. For cheaper taxis, it is possible to book a local taxi company. Here are some local companies:
I tend to use City Cars (although I have been let down once or twice), and occasionally West End Cars, as they are local to where I live. Glasgow Private Hire are a large firm. I've not used them yet but will let you know the outcome when I do!!
