The High Voltage System Cabling

Introduction

There are three different cable assemblies employed by the VeLo HV system. These are to connect:

  1. The Iseg power supply module to the first patch panel (PP0).
  2. The first patch panel to the last patch panel, PP0 - PP1.
  3. The individual channels of PP1 to the respective Repeater board.
  4. The Safety loop cable.
  5. The Inhibit cable.

The implementation of each cable has to meet the CERN safety 23 regulation. Hence all the cables are purchased from the CERN stores that have been certified to meet the safety standard.

Cable 0

The aim of this cable is to connect to the Lemo Redel connector on the power supply to PP0. Since at this stage each channel only corresponds to HT and Return the number of cores that is required is only 32+2. The extra 2 cores is to connect to the safety loop.

Implementation

  • The cable is 34 core (04.31.52.075.9), rated for 3000V with an OD of 12.4mm. The position of PP0 will determine its length.
  • The power supply end has a SAG.H51.LLZBG (male connector) (09.41.34.250.7) 51 pin populated with 34 female contacts ERA.05.403.ZLL1(09.41.33.200.1).
  • The patch panel end has a SAA.H51.LLZG (female connector) (09.41.34.260.5) populated with 32 female contacts ERA.05.403.ZLL1(09.41.33.200.1).

Shopping List

A total of 6 assemblies are required for the HV system. One for each Iseg power supply module.

  • 20m of cable 04.31.52.075.09 .
  • 7 51 pin plug SAG.H51 .
  • 7 51 pin plug SAA.H51 .
  • 448 female contacts ERA.05.403.ZLL1.

Progress

A short version of the cable has been constructed.

Cable 1 or Long Cable

The aim of this cable is to connect the 51 pin connector from each patch panel. This is the longest cable since it has breach the distance between the barracks and the experiment. Each channel in this cable is composed of a triplet. An HT, a hybrid guard and the return.

Implementation

  • A 60m 55 core cable (04.31.52.100.5) rated for 3000V with an outer diameter of 15.3mm.
  • The patch panel 0 end has a SAG.H51.LLZBG (male connector) (09.41.34.250.7) populated with 51 female contacts ERA.05.403.ZLL1(09.41.33.200.1) .
  • The patch panel 1 end has a SAA.H51.LLZG (female connector) (09.41.34.260.5) populated with 51 female contacts ERA.05.403.ZLL1(09.41.33.200.1) .

Shopping List

  • 6 + 1 (spare) 60m cables, results in 320m of cable 04.31.52.100.5 .
  • 7 51 plug SAG.H51.LLZBG .
  • 7 51 plug SAA.H51.LLZG .
  • 714 female contacts, ERA.05.403.ZLL1 .

Progress

A shorter version of the cable has been constructed. A full chain from the Power Supply to the PP1 has been completed and is under tests.

Cable 2

The aim of this cable is to distribute each individual triplet to its corresponding Repeater board.

Implementation

  • A three core cable (04.21.51.103.3) of different lengths. Between 2m and 4m.
  • At both ends it will have a FGG.1B.303.CLAD52 plug.

Shopping List

Lemo has been approached whether they will be capable of making such assembly. 88 of them of different lengths. The original quote was below CHF5k.

Progress

A sample cable has arrived from Lemo for evaluation. The 3 core cable was sent from the CERN stores to Lemo to test whether the cable was appropriate and whether they could make it.
